The Decision-Making Framework

To manage the Decade of Growth responsibly, the Board of Education and Administration utilizes a consistent framework for every project:

• Safety & Security First: Every renovation and new build, like the Middle School Addition, prioritizes modern security standards and improved traffic flow (e.g., the new dedicated bus loop).

• Data-Driven Planning: Decisions are triggered by enrollment milestones and objective capacity studies, ensuring we build only what is needed, when it is needed.

• Fiscal Responsibility: We maximize existing resources first. By self-funding Phase 1 through construction reserves, we provide immediate relief without an immediate tax increase.

• Student Wellness: We design spaces that support not just academic achievement, but the mental and physical health of our students and staff.

 

The 3-Phase Plan for Growth is Buckeye Valley Local Schools’ strategic response to a projected 29% enrollment increase over the next decade. Following the unsuccessful 2024 bond levy, the district pivoted to a phased approach focused on immediate capacity relief using existing reserve funds.

Phase 1: Middle School Addition (Current Focus)

• Scope: A 40,000-square-foot, two-story addition to the southwestern corner of Buckeye Valley Middle School.

• Key Features: 16 new classrooms, 4 STEM areas, a competition-sized gymnasium, and a redesigned bus loop for improved safety.

• Impact: Adds capacity for approximately 400 students, allowing the district to move 5th grade to the middle school to relieve overcrowding at East and West Elementary.

• Timeline: Construction is targeted to break ground in March 2026, with an opening date scheduled for the 2027–28 school year.

Phase 2 & 3: Long-Term Campus Realignment

While the immediate focus is on the middle school, the broader strategy includes:

• Grade Band Shifts: Repurposing existing buildings to create a more efficient flow, such as transitioning the middle school into an intermediate building (Grades 5–6) and eventually shifting 7th and 8th grades.

• Secondary Solutions: Addressing the 75% spike in Grade 9 enrollment by exploring future high school expansion or new construction when enrollment "triggers" are met.

• Preschool Integration: Keeping preschool programming within the elementary schools rather than centralizing it, maintaining community-based early childhood access.

Middle School Construction Update-March 6, 2026

Dear Buckeye Valley Community,

As we look forward to the future of our district, I am excited to share an update regarding the upcoming addition to our Middle School. This project represents a significant step in providing our students with the modern facilities they need to succeed.

In the coming weeks, you will begin to see activity to the west of the current Middle School building as we prepare the site for construction later this year. This initial phase involves clearing trees to make way for a dedicated Middle School Bus Loop that will separate bus and passenger traffic and significantly enhance parking lot safety for our students and families.

I want to emphasize that as we grow, we remain committed to being responsible stewards of our local environment. To protect Ohio’s endangered Indiana and Northern Long-Eared bats, we have carefully timed this work to occur before March 31, ensuring we do not disturb their roosting season.

This process is one of the first visible steps in this exciting Middle School project. We are thrilled to begin this journey and look forward to sharing more details with you soon regarding our official Groundbreaking ceremony later this spring.

Superintendent Stranges will provide an update to the Board of Education at the March 18th Board of Education meeting at 5:30 pm in Baron Hall at the High School.
